Uruguay had the privilege to win the first-ever FIFA WC trophy in 1930. Another South American side Brazil has won the most number of World Cups. Germany & Italy follow Brazil with 4 titles for each of them. The current holder of the title is also a Latin side, Argentina, who clinched their 3rd title in 2022. France & Uruguay both have 2 WC trophies in their cabinet. England won their only title in 1966 and Spain grabbed their one in 2010.

A total of 13 teams have played the WC title at least once. 8 of them had the luck to have the last laugh for a minimum time. Uruguay is the only team that won multiple titles but never finished as runner-up. Netherlands featured in 3 finals followed by Hungary & Czechoslovakia (twice for each) but never won the biggest prize of football. Sweden was beaten in the 1958 final and Croatia finished as the runner-up in 2018.
